The Inventory Adjustments control account is part of Blackpurl's accounting integration setup. It defines the General Ledger (GL) account used to offset any changes made to the value of your inventory through inventory adjustments. This article is Step 4D of the Understanding Accounting Integration series. For the full series, see Accounting Integration Setup: All Steps.
The Inventory Adjustments Account
The Inventory Adjustments GL account is the default offset account used whenever an inventory adjustment is recorded in Blackpurl. This account type is typically set up as a Cost of Goods Sold account in your accounting package.
How Journal Entries Are Created
When you perform an inventory adjustment on a Part Record or Unit Record in Blackpurl without specifying a vendor or customer, Blackpurl generates a journal entry to reflect the change. The direction of the entry depends on whether the adjustment increases or decreases inventory.
Increase Adjustment
When inventory levels or costs are increased through an inventory adjustment, the journal entry is:
Debit — Inventory GL account
Credit — Inventory Adjustment GL account
Decrease Adjustment
When inventory levels or costs are decreased through an inventory adjustment, the journal entry is:
Debit — Inventory Adjustment GL account
Credit — Inventory GL account
Example: Increasing Stock on a Part Record
The example below shows an inventory adjustment being processed to increase the in-stock quantity on a Part Record.
This adjustment is sent to your accounting package as a journal entry that increases the inventory balance with an offset to the Inventory Adjustment GL account.
Using Multiple Adjustment Accounts
You can set up as many inventory adjustment accounts as your business needs. These can be configured as Adjustment Categories — for example, Parts Adjustment, Unit Adjustment, or Rebate Clearing. When processing an adjustment in Blackpurl, you can then select which Adjustment GL account to apply, giving you more detailed reporting across different types of inventory changes.
Your accountant should periodically review the Inventory Adjustment GL account to reconcile the entries posted against it.
