This article covers common reasons a barcode scanner may not be working with Blackpurl and how to resolve them. Issues typically fall into one of three categories: hardware connectivity, browser settings, or Blackpurl configuration.
Blackpurl supports the following barcode scanner models:
Symbol LS2208-SR200007R-NA (USB)
Motorola L14278-TRBU0100ZWR (USB and wireless)
Any plug-and-play barcode scanner should work with Blackpurl in theory, but not all models have been tested. If you are using a different model and experiencing issues, work through the steps below.
Hardware Issues
Hardware issues are the most common cause of scanner problems. Check the following before moving on to other causes:
The barcode scanner is plugged in and its indicator light is on.
Your operating system (for example, Windows 10) recognises the scanner as a connected device.
Run the Notepad Test
The Notepad test confirms whether your scanner is communicating with your computer.
Open Notepad on your computer.
Scan a barcode from one of your parts into the Notepad window.
If a line of numbers appears in Notepad, the scanner is connected and working correctly.
If nothing appears, the scanner is not connected. Unplug it, then reconnect it and repeat the test.
Browser Issues
Browser autocomplete can interfere with barcode scanning. When autocomplete is enabled, the browser may display a dropdown of previously scanned values as soon as you scan into a field, which can redirect input or cause the wrong value to be entered.
Check whether autocomplete is enabled in your browser (for example, Google Chrome) and disable it. Refer to your browser's settings or help documentation for instructions on turning off autocomplete.
Blackpurl Issues
If the Notepad test passes but scanning into Blackpurl still does not work, check the following.
Invalid Number Error
If Blackpurl returns an invalid number when you scan, the scanner may be programmed to append extra characters to each scan. Reset the barcode scanner to its factory defaults and try again. Refer to your scanner's user guide for reset instructions.
Mismatch or Wrong Number Appearing
If the scanned value does not match the expected part, the barcode on the physical part may not match what is recorded in Blackpurl. To resolve this:
Open the Part Record in Blackpurl and print off a barcode.
Compare the printed barcode against the barcode physically on the part.
If they do not match, request the correct SKU list from your vendor — these are usually included on their price file.
Upload the correct SKUs to the SKU field on each Part Record.
If you need help with the upload, provide the SKU list to Blackpurl Support and they can handle it for you.
Cursor Not in the Scan Field
Blackpurl only receives scan input when the cursor is placed in the correct field. Before scanning, click into the target field to make sure it has focus. For example, when adding a part to a Customer Order, click into the Scan or search to add a part, kit, fee or merchandise field before scanning.
