Texting Consent and Opt-Outs (STOP)

How Messenger handles permission to text, STOP, HELP and START.

Messenger only texts numbers you have permission to text, and it handles STOP replies for you.

When...

What happens

You text a new number for the first time

You confirm once that the customer agreed to receive texts. Then you can send.

The customer texts you first

That counts as permission. Nothing to confirm.

The customer replies STOP (or a similar word)

The number is opted out. Texts to it fail with an "opted out" reason.

An opted-out customer texts you again

Any message other than STOP opts them back in.

The customer replies HELP or START

Handled automatically.

Protect your texting number. Only text customers about their business with you, and never re-add an opted-out number to get around STOP. Carriers monitor this, and it can affect your dealership's ability to text.
