Average Cost vs. Cost Explained

Understand the difference between Average Cost and Cost (Item/Package) for parts in Blackpurl, and how each value is calculated and updated.

Blackpurl tracks two distinct cost figures for parts: Average Cost and Cost (which appears as Cost (Item) or Cost (Package)). Understanding the difference helps you interpret part pricing accurately. All cost values in Blackpurl are shown excluding taxes.

Average Cost

Average Cost represents the average per-item cost of the in-stock inventory for a part. Because stock may have been received at different costs over time, Blackpurl calculates the average across all units currently on hand.

For example, if your dealership receives the same part twice at different costs:

  • First receipt: $10.00

  • Second receipt: $11.00

You now have 2 units on hand. The Average Cost is $10.50, calculated as ($10 + $11) ÷ 2.

Cost (Item) and Cost (Package)

Cost (Item) and Cost (Package) represent the last known cost of a part. This is the cost Blackpurl uses when populating a part on a Vendor Order (VO).

This value is only updated in three ways:

  • Price file import — the cost is updated to match what the price file import specifies

  • Vendor receiving / Vendor Invoice — the cost is updated when the Vendor Invoice cost is finalised

  • Manual update — a user manually changes the cost value directly on the part
